Northeast Regional Medical Center has Broad Impact on Kirksville and Surrounding Communities
3/28/2022
KIRKSVILLE, Mo., March 28, 2022 – Over the course of a year, the impact of Northeast Regional Medical Center adds up as the skilled and compassionate hands of physicians, nurses and other team members deliver safe, quality care around the clock every day. Beyond clinical care, the hospital is a major employer and regularly invests resources to expand and enhance the services available locally. The overall community benefit each year is significant and totaled more than $42 million in 2021.
Last year, the hospital and clinics delivered care at more than 85,000 patient visits as the pandemic heightened the need for medical care. The hospital has supported more than 150 COVID inpatients since March 2020 while sustaining all of its other medical services. To help protect the community from the COVID-19 virus, more than 1,000 vaccine doses were provided and more than 225 outpatients were treated with monoclonal antibodies, helping them avoid serious symptoms and hospitalization.
“While treating patients with broad ranges of medical needs, the staff at NRMC also provided quality care for patients with COVID,” said Tony Keene, chief executive officer for Northeast Regional Medical Center. “The Kirksville and surrounding communities are fortunate to have this strong and committed team of clinicians and caregivers here in northeast Missouri who have made and continue to make a difference for so many patients daily. From happiness because of a clear mammogram or colonoscopy to a heart beating in rhythm after a procedure, our team has helped people get well and live healthier.”
Employees and medical staff brought their skills and compassion to support more than 11,100 emergency department visits, more than 1,700 inpatients and perform more than 3,200 surgeries. Over 69,000 patients received care across the hospital and affiliated clinics. We also delivered joy to local families as more than 440 babies were born.
NRMC continues to grow and evolve as resources are directed toward increased medical services, facilities and technologies that are important to patients. These include adding an additional tool for breast cancer screening with new 3D Mammography, and offering urology services to better serve our region by treating a range of urological conditions.
As NRMC works to continuously meet patients’ needs, it also gives back to the broader Kirksville region. NRMC provided over $8.3 million in charity and uncompensated care for the community’s most vulnerable. And the $4.6 million paid in property, sales and GRT taxes helps support civic resources and services.
NRMC also works with local charitable and community organizations such as NEMO APES, United Way, and Forest Area Trail System.
The hospital’s payroll of more than $23.5 million ripples across the local economy as employees buy goods and services. The hospital also made capital improvements totaling more than $1.8 million to upgrade facilities and equipment in many areas of the hospital to enhance the safety and quality for patients.
“We are glad to be a part of the Kirksville community, and we will continue to do all we can to provide excellent healthcare services for everyone in Northeast Missouri,” Keene said.
